Jennifer Macdonald lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her husband and is the proud mother of two sons and three grandchildren. She holds a BA in English, a BS, MAT, and EdS in education, and taught high school English and creative writing. This children’s book, her first, is based partly on a true story and is intended to inspire meaningful conversations about acceptance and respect for our differences.
Meet Gimme — alone on a huge Texas ranch. He is young, adventurous, and often acts before he thinks. Follow his search for connection in a place where fitting in is a challenge, especially when you’re a gemsbok and believe you are a cow.

Gimme looks different from the other cows, and they reject him because of it. The story teaches children that being unique is not a flaw but something to be proud of, and that true friendship looks beyond appearances.
Throughout the story, Gimme experiences deep loneliness and isolation. He desperately wants to fit in and find a connection. This theme explores the universal human (and animal) need to belong and be accepted by others.
Even though the cows reject Gimme, he still risks his life to save them from the mountain lion. This theme shows that true character is revealed through brave, selfless actions and that kindness can overcome prejudice and open doors to friendship.

Gimme doesn’t fully understand who he is until he sees his reflection in the pond. This theme explores the journey of self-discovery, learning to recognize and appreciate one’s own unique qualities, even when others don’t see your value.
Despite being ignored, misunderstood, and rejected multiple times, Gimme never gives up trying to connect with others. This theme teaches children the importance of resilience and continuing to be kind even when faced with repeated disappointment.
The cows judge Gimme solely based on how he looks, his large size and long horns—without giving him a chance. This theme highlights the danger of making assumptions about others based on outward appearances and encourages looking beyond the surface to see a person’s (or animal’s) true character.
